This week on Thursday, September 10th, 2026, I’ll be joining one of Dome Fest West‘s Fulldome Forums webinars to discuss Using Domecasting to Expand your Reach.
Domecasting and dome streaming are related ideas of being able to transmit a planetarium program from one dome to another (or many others) simultaneously for a share presentation that hugely expands audience reach. I’ve been experimenting with the capabilities of domecasting since 2012, including the ability to allow remote presentation by planetarium staff, special joint presentations between domes, and multi-site lectures by special experts. Among my favorite examples of this were a series of co-presented events hosted between Morrison Planetarium and Adler Planetarium that I supported in 2017.
Subsequently, the desire to retain the online and remote audience my planetarium had built during the pandemic led to further experiments with livestreaming and simulcasting of dome programs, and the exploration of new technology solutions to support them.
The combination of these experiences led to my participation in panels at the last two International Planetarium Society conferences in 2024 and 2026. Sharing the stage with colleagues from around the world, we discussed the challenges and opportunities domecasting present. With the technology more capable than ever, I feel we are in a critical moment now to see if we can create meaningful content experiences that will move domecasting forward to widespread use for collaborative programs.
I’m grateful Dome Fest West is continuing these conversations, and look forward to joining colleages from the Intuitive Planetarium at the US Space and Rocket Center and Cosm as we discuss the current capabilities of domecasting. In particular, I’ll be the primary panelist with experience outside the Cosm ecosystem including driving experiences with Uniview and OpenSpace as well as efforts to develop platform-agnostic solutions.
